How to Read, by an Author

Thanks to classmate Angela Lewis for the link to this presentation with Nigerian writer Chimamanda Adichie. Adichie states that our various lives and cultures are composed of many overlapping stories. The novelist warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding.

How does Adichie's statement track with what we've been learning this semester about responsible reading, cross-culturally?

  1. First off, thanks so much for posting this Angela! I thought this presentation was very moving and offers a great insight!

Secondly, she is absolutely right that the "single story" is dangerous. It is pivotal that we open both our minds and hearts to many forms of literature from a particular culture to gain a true insight. If we read one story, we're lost, we haven't really understood what a particular culture contains. However, if we delve deeper, continue to read and research, a paradise is indeed opened.
