Group Community Service Project News

As I announced in class, I am excited about this semester's cache of group community service projects and the ways you have connected your work to the themes of the course. As part of the project assignment, you must invite the class to attend any performance or presentation you mount. If you are running a donation/collection of any kind, you must include the class in your donor pool. These measures are meant to promote inter-group communication as part of our class's learning community, as well as to provide a forum for each group to advertise its goals more widely.

Please reply to this post in order to share your group's announcements by the start of class on Friday, October 9th. In addition, any group may use this space to post project updates at any time.

  1. Currently, our community service project has been great. We have not done much research for the project, considering we are still trying to formulate what our focus will be in the presentation. We have visited some elderly women in a trailer park near JMU a couple of times so far. They are very interesting and their lives are quite different than ours, and we have definitely felt humbled by visiting them. One cool thing we have discussed as a group is how it widens our perspective and discourages us from getting caught up in the bubble of JMU's campus. There are lots of people who do not have the same privileges as us and it is our duty to reach out to others. So far so good.

  3. Our group would like to announce that we are collecting canned goods for the Harrisonburg Salvation Army and would like everyone in the class to bring in a canned good on October 19th (Monday). As additions to our individual collections, your donations will greatly benefit hungry people within the Harrisonburg community. Hunger is a global issue. By addressing hunger within Harrisonburg, we hope to contribute to the elimination of hunger throughout the entire world.

  6. Hey guys!!!
Are group's project is to promote awareness in support of Tom's Shoes effort for the impoverished Ethiopian soceity. Supplying shoes to these communities helps prevent podoconiosis,a debilitating disease that plagues those who are forced to walk barefoot. Our group will sell JMU colored string bracelets with a small blurb attached with information on how each individual can help. Donations will be accepted and the proceeds from the bracelet sales will go to Tom's shoes. We will be selling bracelets in class during the week of October 26th! They are only 25 cents, please help our cause!!!!
    Thanks,

  7. Our group has gone to visit children at an after school day care. The first time we visited, we read a couple stories to the class. The next time we go is when our actual project is going to take place. We are going to read an oral narrative to the class, then they are to draw pictures that they believe depict the oral narrative. Everyone is very excited, even the children said they cannot wait for us to come back. It was a lot of fun interacting with the children. They all seem really interested and are very eager to participate. Our project does not really require any outside help from others because of the project we are doing. It is more group focused, with the group members interacting with the students.

    Thanks,
    Steven, Sam, Max

  8. Our community service project includes aiding Mercy House in putting on their 2009 Guitar Hero Fundraiser. Mercy House is a complete support and educational program for families affected by homelessness. This fundraiser will take place on Saturday, November 7th at 10am at the Valley Mall. Homelessness is an issue that affects people globally, while Guitar Hero is an activity which brings young and old together through the use of art and music. Please come to this event and help support Mercy House!

  9. For our group community service project we are aiming to raise money for the shelters here in Harrisonburg. We are going to try to do that by hosting a show here at JMU, the times and dates haven't been set up yet, we can post that information later when we pick a day. If anyone has any talent or something they could contribute to the show that would be greatly appreciated. We would defintaely like all of you all to come, we are striving to teach and expand diversity among the school.

  10. Hey Class,
Our group is helping out with the production of the play "49" by Hanay Geiogamah. It is a Native American play and ties in well with our De Landa reading from way back. The play is running October 27-31 in Theatre II. We will be doing ticket sales, at the very least and are trying to get more involved. It should be a great show, the cast is travelling up to Boston to perform it after the run here. We hope everyone can make it!

  11. Our group is volunteering at the local elementary school, Spotswood Elementary. We've been split up between teachers and today was our first day helping with the kids. Today, the kids read to me and I helped them sound out the words they didn't understand and I also assisted them with their spelling words. The kids were so eager to have me sit with them and read books because they really wanted to know they were doing a good job. It was definitely a great experience!

  12. Hi guys. Our group is doing book drive and donating old children's books to a local elementary school. While you're home for Thanksgiving break we'd really appreciate it if you looked around for children's books you may have around the house. After break we will be collecting these books and bringing them to the school. Anything you have will help! Thank you.
